Group of friends in the port of Salonika

The photo is part of my maternal grandparents' personal collection.

It shows a group of friends in fancy dress in the port of Salonika in the summer of 1929, on July 14th to be precise. As French influence (French schools and newspapers) was strong in Greece at the time, perhaps they were commemorating the national holiday.

My grandfather is completely on the left in the shot, he's 20 years old ; he's proudly posing with a whole bunch of friends. Who are they ?

This photo was taken from my maternal grandparents' personal collection. It shows my grandmother, 2nd on the right, and her older sister, last on the left.

They are posing, perhaps on the banks of the Marne, where they sometimes went dancing on Sundays.

The 3 unknown friends in the photo were undoubtedly friends from Salonika, too. Who were they ?

Family from Greece

I have no information about this photo, other than the period I'm guessing: the 1930s, and the location: probably Salonika in Greece.

In the photo, a complete family, grandparents, their children as a couple and a little girl.

I'm thinking of a family by marriage who sent a souvenir to my grandparents who had settled in France in the early 1930s.

This photo comes from the collection of my maternal grandparents.

It is printed on a postcard base. It is dated October 21, 1935, and is very likely to have been taken in Salonika (or possibly Paris).

It represents a young girl, a friend or perhaps a cousin of my grandparents.

The postcard-sized photo is from the collection of my maternal grandparents.

I have no indication of date or place, but I think it's a photo taken in Salonika in the 1930s, featuring friends of my grandfather (former students of the Italian school?).

The information on the back of this photo, a portrait of a young man, tells me that it dates from 1937.

It came from the collection of my maternal grandparents, so I imagine that a friend of my grandfather's in Salonika, Greece, sent it to him.

Perhaps a classmate from the Italian school where he was a pupil.

This elegant young man poses in a photo studio, perhaps in Salonika, Greece, during the 1930s.

I suppose it was a friend of my maternal grandfather's who sent him this photo in France (perhaps one of his classmates from the Italian school in Salonika?).

Three friends pose on the street

My cover photo illustrates the theme of this blog: WHERE? WHEN? WHAT? and finally WHO.

This photo, found in my maternal grandparents' albums, could have been taken in Salonika (Greece after 1912) or Czernowitz (now Ukraine), or anywhere else for that matter. You can see a mountain in the distance, or a tramway.

The date seems to be in the 1930s, pre-war if the protagonists' clothes are anything to go by.

Three people pose: a man in a leather coat with a hat and cane, and two elegantly dressed women (without hats). They are on the street near an outdoor store and café. A number of people are seated in the background, on an arterial road with low-rise buildings.

I can't identify any of these three people. Are they friends? Are they family?

On the back of this plate, absolutely nothing. I won't be getting any help from this side. But the help of the community can be invaluable if they can identify the location or some of the other details in the photo.
